EXPENSE SUMMARY for SHAULA4 PROJECT
The Shaula4 project was based on a much lower
budget - and ambitions - compared to the circumnavigation project; we were
taking for granted that some money would have had to be spent to rejuvenate the
instrumentation and perhaps for some major maintenance job such as the engine or
sails and rigging. With this in mind, we set ourselves a limit
at about 50/60.000 Euros between boat purchase and maintenance/upgrading jobs.
Soon we had to acknowledge that boats of about 10
meters for sale around 30.000 Euros are generally in very mediocre maintenance
status, then we found this aluminium hull, which would be priced in an entirely
different price-range had it been in a better state, and we accepted to take the
risk of an higher expenditure for a somewhat more ambitious boat than initially
planned.
Besides the expected updating expenses, we met
big additional costs mainly due to the two following causes:
- standard equipment that normally you would
expect to find on a well-equipped boat and which were missing (it's a long list,
from safety gear to accessories like a passerelle, ropes and mooring lines, a
dinghy, etc.)
- basic systems that are taken for granted and
instead, for a number of reasons, had to be totally rebuilt (electrical
distribution, gas distribution, water system...), causing not only an important
and unforeseen expense, but also a major delay in the works, that will take more
than 2 years to be completed!!
LONG-DISTANCE SAILING WITH A SMALL BUDGET?
Albeit a bit on the small side, a boat like Shaula4 is perfectly capable to
carry a couple around the world in reasonable safety and comfort, but the cost
is still significant (100.000 Euros, and our project is lacking some important
items like SSB radio, watermaker, solar panels, heating...).
Comparing the two projects, one would think that
the lower cost of Shaula4 is entirely due to the lower purchasing price of the
boat, while equipping costs are similar, taking into account the items missing
on Shaula4; this is not at all implausible, considering that the cost for
equipping a boat for long-distance travelling are little dependent on the boat's
size, for similar choices and technologies. In reality, a closer
examination of the expenditures would show that on Shaula4 many expenses were
due to "extraordinary maintenance" rather than "equipping for ocean sailing",
and still, a better-maintained boat would have costed more, and the end result
would have been more or less the same.

costs; like for Shaula3, most works have been performed by us, otherwise the
cost would have been totally unmanageable and un-echonomical:
